Scholastic Teacher Book Wizard

Bookmark and Share

A sub-site from the Scholastic website, teachers are provided with a very useful tool for helping students make reading selections. Some of these services include a Quick Search, Leveled Search, and BookAlike search. The Quick Search tool allows you to search by title, author, and keyword, if you already know what you are looking for. The Leveled Search offers more options, and allows you to create individualized reading lists for students based on their interests, reading ability, and age level. In the Leveled Search feature, you can search for books by reading level, type, and genre. You can define reading level by grade level equivalent, Lexile, DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), or Guided Reading. The reading lists that are generated take into account all of the information provided. For example, if a second grader reads at a 7th grade level, ONLY the 7th grade level books that are appropriate for 2nd graders would come back in the list. The third search option, BookAlike, allows you to find books similar to titles students already enjoy. With BookAlike, you can also specify if the books should be at, above, or below the original book's level. In addition to these three great search functions, the Book Wizard will also show whether books are part of the Scholastic Reading Counts and/or Accelerated Reader programs. Finally, a My Book Lists feature allows you to print, email, and share lists of books that you create. To use this feature, you need to complete the free registration process. The site contains a searchable database of over 50,000 books from all publishers.

Discovery Streaming

Bookmark and Share

Formally known as United Streaming, Discovery Streaming is a subscription service for the web that allows users to log on and view over 40,000 clips from educational programs in the past twenty years. It is a wonderful tool for educators and even allows clips to be downloaded for when web-access is unavailable. The real gem of this service is that videos are broken into specific segments allowing teachers to show the specified section of an hour long program if they choose. The videos can also be incorporated in web-based assessments that will grade student work and send the data to the instructor via e-mail. A really great service that is in place in many schools across the country.

This program allows students to explore the Earth in a 3-D environment. Many people may be familiar with this interesting way to look at our planet, but there are constant developments that make the program even more useful for educators. A fairly new feature allows the user to see an accurate portrayal of major cities in a 3-D style such as New York. Making virtual fieldtrips has never been more exciting. What's better than teaching the class about a landmark in a foreign country and then "flying" to it in Google Earth. Now Google Earth allows exploration of local streets and even under the ocean.

Open Office

An open source alternative to programs like Microsoft Office. It is an excellent program that is compatible with all major word processing software. This is one of the software suites that has been around for a long time and I recommend it to students who may not wish to shell out more than 120 dollars for a software suite which does pretty much the same thing. A great tool for students and any classroom on a budget.

Bubbl.us

Bookmark and Share

This online mind-mapping application bills itself as "brainstorming made simple." With an intuitive user interface, this is a nice alternative to software that needs to be purchased and installed like Inspiration. In essence, bubbl.us, enables you to visually represent brainstormed concepts and then web the connections and relationships between them. The net result is quite similar to the brainstormed webs that teachers create on chalkboards, and that students are sometimes expected to produce on paper. You can't import your own images, so it is solely text based - but it is still a nice free tool for older students and teachers.

This is a powerful program from TechSmith, the company behind Camtasia. Jing makes it easy to capture still screen images or to create video screencasts, and then share them. This is invaluable if you want to help anyone else learn to use software, or do anything else on a computer. With Jing, it's a cinch to make a screen capture or a video that includes audio commentary. Once that's done, the image or video can be saved to your computer and/or stored online. Jing makes it convenient to share the online version. You simply paste the URL into an email or chat and then send it along. Unless you are going to be sharing the screencast offline, there is no reason to save to your computer. You can go back to Jing any time to retrieve screencasts that you've made in the past. A great training tool, and a nice way for teachers to explain ideas to students on the computer, or vice versa.

This is another mind-mapping platform, but one that facilitates online collaboration in real time. Mindmeister does not have built in voice or text chat functions, but it recommends using Skype for real time conversation while collaborating. Use of Skype is facilitated if you add your Skype ID to your Mindmeister profile. A great way to have students collaborate across distances or to offer guidance as a teacher. Mind-maps can be printed or exported. You can also import mind-maps into Mindmeister from either Freemind or Mindjet (other mind-mapping platforms) Mindmesiter has made it easy to add tags and then publish your own mind-map if you wish.

Mixbook

Bookmark and Share

Mixbook is one of a growing number of online applications that facilitate the creative sharing of digital images. Mixbook is different than most because of its book-like format, and because of its convenient options for including text. With this application, you can create books of up to at least 100 pages. Mixbooks can be created and shared online for free, but with Mixbook you also have the option of purchasing a hard copy of your book. There are many occasions in the "classroom" when it would be powerfully motivating to be working toward the creation of an actual book. I think this might be especially appropriate for collaborative projects involving either entire classes or small groups. For example, a class might like to work together to create a "year in review" book, a special report on a class field trip, or even an anthology of student poetry.
